Religion and Same Sex Marriage

Pardon my naiveté, but I don’t understand why christians, who are supposedly non-judgmental and forgiving, are so up in arms about the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same sex marriage. The basic reason behind the legalization was that gay couples, many of whom are more committed and monogamous than their heterosexual counterparts, were being denied the same legal rights as their straight counterparts. Can you imagine being told that you had no legal right to see your partner in the hospital because you are not family? Or being able to provide health insurance for the person with whom you have shared your life? What about when the person with whom you have lived for 30 years dies and his/her family comes in and takes everything they want because they are family and you are not, even though you purchased the items together or they have sentimental value to you?
